Weekly Recap: 3/15/21

By Anna Levi '24 and Eloise Miller '24

Welcome back to the fourth Weekly Recap. Not only is it the one-month anniversary of the weekly recap, but this week marks one year of lockdowns due to COVID-19. It’s hard to imagine that it’s been one year since school’s first shut down in NYC, but that’s the COVID time warp for you.

COVID-19 Statistics:

Deaths in the US: 541,000

Cases in the US: 29,800,000

Worldwide Deaths: 2,690,000

Worldwide Cases: 122,000,000

This week for Women’s History Month, we’ll be highlighting Alexandria Ocasio Cortez. AOC is a congresswoman representing NYC’s 14th congressional district. She was first elected in June of 2018 and was re-elected this past November. In 2018, Cortez ran for representative against ten-term elected representative Joe Crowley, winning a seat on the House floor. If you want to know more about her, check out the movie Knock Down the House on Netflix. The trailer is linked below:

Hawaii Floods:

In the past week or so, parts of Hawaii have been experiencing heavy floods. Some people even had to evacuate. Homes and bridges have been destroyed, and approximately thirteen inches fell in only eight hours. This is yet another example of climate change. Please inform yourself and others around you about climate change and global warming and about how you can help.

Shootings in Atlanta:

On Tuesday the 17th, three shootings occurred in Atlanta. The 21-year-old shooter went to three spas and killed eight people in total, six of whom were Asian. The motivation behind the shootings is still unclear, according to authorities. However, these shootings must be taken seriously and considered as a hate crime against Asians as opposed to being dismissed. Anti-Asian hate crimes have nearly doubled since the beginning of the pandemic, and racist rhetoric has surged. We stand with the Asian American community to denounce this hate and racism, and we’ve attached some resources below.
