It is safe to say that we have survived the first week back from break; it’s always difficult to get back on track from a school vacation, especially given this year’s circumstances. This week, we are starting “weekly recaps,” where we will be highlighting some notable events that have happened in this past week in the country and the NEST+m community.
1. Texas Storm and Power Outage
About a week ago, a huge thunderstorm hit Texas. Temperatures dropped into the negatives, and people were stuck with no power for days. Some even died from the cold. Many have criticized people like Senator Ted Cruz, who flew to Cancun while Texans were suffering.
2. Increased Attacks on Asian Americans
Since the COVID-19 Pandemic, Asian hate crimes are on the rise. In fact, the likelihood of an Asian American experiencing a hate crime has risen by 1900%. There will be a lesson about racism towards the Asian community during this week’s advisory. If you have a testimonial regarding this issue, there is a Padlet and Flipgrid to highlight your experiences. Please check out the Asian Culture Club’s Instagram page for the Padlet and more information.
3. “The Black Experience” -- Presentation by the NEST+m BSU
On Thursday, February 25, the BSU led a presentation titled “The Black Experience.” Thank you to the BSU for creating something so powerful and for teaching us about Black experiences. Many of us will never understand what it is like being Black in this country, but it’s always important to listen and educate ourselves. If you want to get more involved, you are always welcome to join the Black Student Union and/or the Anti-Racism Council.
If you missed BSU’s presentation, check it out here:
Stay tuned next week for another update! Here’s to hoping that next week looks a bit more normal, whatever that even means anymore.
