Welcome back to the third Weekly Recap! They say the third time’s the charm, so let’s see if we can translate some of that charm to this week’s recap.
This week, we’ll be highlighting Laverne Cox, an incredible trans woman, actress, and activist. Born in Mobile, Alabama in 1972, Laverne went on to star in many hit movies and TV shows, including Orange Is the New Black and Promising Young Woman. Laverne has also advocated on behalf of trans individuals everywhere and is a true hero to all women. Schools Reopening:
On Monday this week, the DOE announced that high schools would reopen. After months of learning from home, this piece of news was both anxiety-inducing and exciting for many. Students who initially signed up for the blended schedule will enter the school building to attend advisory for two hours a week.
On Friday the 12th, NEST+m had yet another asynchronous day, and for us, it was relaxing to not have any Zoom meetings scheduled back to back and to have a flexible schedule. NEST+m also invited guests to speak to students. These guests included Kevin Norman, Vice President at Breaking Ground, a provider of housing; Midwin Charles, a lawyer and legal journalist; and Mohsin Mohi-ud-din, an activist and artist.
Floyd Family:
On Friday the 12th, it was announced that George Floyd’s family would receive 27 million dollars after his murder last summer. Police brutality is nowhere near ending, so we all have to come together to fight racism and petition for justice. We’ve attached some resources below to educate yourself on racism in the United States, as well as how to be an ally and play an active role in combating prejudice.
