You reach your hand into the pantry. A bag of the golden snack that smiles back rests beside a box of the flaky, cheesy cracker we know as Cheez-Its. Your stomach grumbles, begging you to just choose one already, but you know this isn’t an easy decision to make. Which snack will you choose to liberate from the pantry first? We asked various NEST+m students to find out.
A survey asking members of the Newspaper Club and the Science Olympiad Club to share their opinions on this contentious issue revealed that students preferred Goldfish by a slim thirteen percent. When asked to justify their answers, most respondents simply said they felt drawn to Goldfish crackers for their friendly shape and less greasy, salty taste. A few, however, decided to elaborate.
“Ultimately, both are great snack choices, yet when looking at the grand scheme of things, Goldfish is superior,” said an anonymous respondent. “Goldfish is iconic in its endless new flavor combinations and classic smiley fish shape. Their size makes it easy to pop in your mouth, and they don't have big salt granules that'll leave your mouth parched after a handful. Goldfish is just a fun, light, and nostalgic snack that will never get old.”
Another respondent believed Cheez-Its offered the right amount of saltiness and more fitting flavor variations. “While Goldfish come in different varieties, [the company has] taken it way too far with pizza and pretzel [flavors]," said the respondent. "It's no longer a Goldfish, it's a pretzel. Come on now. Meanwhile, Cheez-Its [include] classic and white cheddar [flavors], mini and jumbo [sizes], and so much more. Cheez-Its for life.”
In this close race, NEST+m students revealed that they are more inclined to choose Goldfish to leave the pantry first. While a majority of respondents made clear that they enjoyed both snacks, ultimately, it was Goldfish’s less overwhelmingly greasy and salty taste that was the icing on the cake.
